Men 7 v Doncaster 5

Sheffield 7ths lost to Doncaster 5th 1-0 in the late game at Bennetthorpe between two evenly matched teams. We felt we were robbed as their goal followed a back stick to keep the ball in play , which everyone except the umpire saw , and we unfortunately had a penalty stroke saved.

We dropped from a squad of fifteen when selected to nine , so thanks to Jon Reynolds, Kaz and Joe Highland for staying in Doncaster after playing for the 6th and to Mark Cuff who came with us after Worksop cancelled the 5ths game by email on Saturday morning . Yours truly only lasted a half having been hit on the head with an opposition stick and then being hit on the cheek by a great clearance from Tom Bendy ,if it had hit one of the opposition instead. He made a number of really good saves and clearances (apart from that one) The only other regular senior was Amhad , who was solid in defence, apart from those mentioned earlier. Jon and Kaz held the defence together and Mark prompted the youngsters to make some good attacks from midfield.
We had a total of seven juniors who all gave really good performances. Outstanding performances from Eddie (by a margin the smallest player) and Freddie Davies. Finley had his best game putting in real effort , and even got a green card for over enthusiastically stopping one of their attacks.
Stan Hammond, playing his first senior game for a while, Lucas Barron , Kai and Joe all put in lots of runs and created some good chances which we failed to convert or were well saved by their keeper.
Apart from their none goal Doncaster had the best of the first half and probably should have scored a couple of real goals but we also had our own chances.
We started better in the second half , with me nursing the egg on my head in the car, and dominated the play creating a number of chances one of which resulted in a stroke for a save with a none goalkeepers foot , which their keeper saved.
Our pressure should have produced an equaliser but we were frustrated by some good defensive play from the experienced opposition defenders.
Thanks to Lee for managing the team ,and making me stay off at half time, he really got the best out of thw whole team.
