
Based in South Yorkshire, Sheffield Hockey Club (SHC) is one of the oldest hockey clubs in the country and proudly stands as one of the premier hockey clubs in the North of England. We provide an outstanding hockey experience from participation through to elite performance and currently operate seven men's teams, five women's teams and a mixed development side.
Our Men's 1st XI competes in the England Hockey League North Conference, while our Men's 2nd XI plays in the Yorkshire & North-East Premier Division. We are proud to have developed players who have progressed to represent their home nations and Team GB at Olympic level.
Alongside our senior programme, SHC has a thriving youth section with over 280 boys and girls aged 5–16 and was one of the first clubs in the country to achieve England Hockey Talent Centre status. We are also the host club for the England Hockey Talent Academy for the Yorkshire region.
SHC is now actively seeking applications for the following role:
Men's National League Head Coach
Location: Sheffield, South Yorkshire
Contractual Status: Self-Employed
Hours: 8–10 hours per week during the season, including evenings and weekends
Hourly Rate: Circa £30 per hour plus travel expenses
You will lead our Men's Performance Programme, overseeing both the Men's 1st XI and Men's 2nd XI squads. This exciting and influential role will involve leading all aspects of the performance environment, from pre-season planning and player development through to selection, match preparation and match-day coaching.
Working closely with players, coaches and club stakeholders, you will create a high-performance culture that enables athletes to maximise their potential whilst supporting the continued development of talented youth and university players into senior hockey.
A key responsibility of the role will be overseeing the coaching services provided by Sheffield Hockey Club to the Sheffield Hallam University Men's First Team, helping to strengthen player pathways and align performance objectives across both programmes.
Applicants will be expected to have significant coaching experience and a proven track record of success at National League, Regional Premier League, or equivalent performance level.
You will be a fully qualified coach with excellent technical and tactical knowledge of the modern game, able to demonstrate expertise in individual and team development, coaching methodology and contemporary performance trends. You will understand how to balance the demands of elite performance with the long-term development needs of talented athletes.
As an energetic, positive and ambitious leader, you will possess excellent communication and relationship-building skills and be able to demonstrate experience of developing young players and integrating them successfully into senior performance environments.
This role would suit an individual who is passionate about delivering high-quality programmes, thrives in a challenging environment and can work effectively both independently and as part of a wider coaching and management team.
Training sessions for the Men's Performance Squad take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, with Sheffield Hallam University Men's First Team training taking place on Monday evenings during term time. Match commitments will typically take place at weekends throughout the season.
