SHC beat Maidstone 9-1 in Tier 2 Plate final.

Sheffield 9-1 Maidstone

Sheffield Ladies first team returned from Lee Valley with the EH Tier 2 Plate trophy after hammering Maidstone 9-1.

The team had beaten Devonport Services 2-1 in the previous round and went in to the final having secured promotion to the National League having won the YNE Premier League. In their final match they thrashed Halifax 7-0.

Having watched a fly past by the Red Arrows, Sheffield got off to the perfect with Emma Walker slotting home after just three minutes.

Maidstone responded with a brace of penalty corners, but Sheffield’s defence held firm and kept them out. The Kent side continued to frustrate Sheffield, who failed to capitalise on a number of good chances.

Eventually, with the first half nearly over, Kath Hughes smashed her shot past the keeper to make it 2-0 at half time.

There was an explosive start to the second half at the Abbeydale outfit netted three times in ten minutes. Firstly, Hannah Proffitt slotted the ball home after the initial shot at a penalty corner was saved. Then Emma Walker got her second of the game with a neat finish. Alysha Ferreira added a fifth to put the game beyond Maidstone.

However, even with the game won, the scoring continued. Rebecca Hutson added a sixth, notching her 30th goal of the season, making her joint top scorer for the whole club.

Hughes grabbed her second of the game to make it 7-0 and not to be outdone, Ferreira scored her second and the team’s 8th. England Masters international, Hughes wasn’t finished and smashed the ball home to complete her hat-trick.

Maidstone got one back after converting a penalty corner with a well struck shot.

Quite deservedly, it was Hughes who picked up the trophy to start the celebrations.

Congratulations to all players involved in the cup run and coaching staff too!!
