Having watched the weather closely at the end of the week it was a pleasant surprise and relief to find Halifax free of wind and rain, yes it was on the cool side but no one noticed once we started playing.
With only 5 of the regular players from last years 4's league and cup winning team and under new Captain's Jen Farrington and Karen Milbourn it took a while for things to settle down. But settle they did and the running started with the ball going end to end and us taking the early lead. Sadly within the first 15 minutes Marni went down having hurt her ankle, she did come back on the pitch after applying ice but was unable to continue, hardly surprising as she discovered she has a small fracture on her return to Sheffield. We wish her a speedy recovery.
This left us slightly disputed with our Subs rotations but everyone gave 100% when playing out of their preferred position. It was a relief when half time came score tied 2-2.
With a half time reshuffle the end to end play continued and so did the goals. It was frantic with each team taking the lead only for the other to equalise. With 5 minutes to go score 4-4 we were awarded a penalty flick following a foot on the gaol line from a short corner. Susie Brossler made it look easy 5-4 to us. Neither side were going to give up with both teams continuing to attack. Sheffield conceded a penalty corner which they converted though a number of raised eyebrows with regards to the height of the strike. But true to our team nature no one questioned the umpire decision on the pitch, as we always say we can't play without an umpire.
Plenty of positives and lots to learn ~ need to take notes for match report writing and all of the team like foam banana/shrimp sweets!
Goals for Susie Brossler 2 ( F and PS) Hannah Richardson ( F on her birthday and Sheffield debut) Helen Burland (F) and Hajar El Sayed (F)
