With many new faces in the women’s section of the club, the 3s welcomed Beth Harwood, Suzanne Murphy and Lucy Whitehead for their SHC debuts.
With Wakefield getting stuck in traffic and therefore having to start 10 minutes late it allowed the 3s extra time to warm up and get our heads in the game - and boy did it show! Wakefield had first push back, but somehow, with only 25 seconds on the clock the 3s were up 1-0 - a great solo goal by Jo Paul! SHC looked to keep the pressure on Wakefield and only 6 minutes later they went further ahead. This time for Izzy with an amazing strike off her back foot. 2-0 SHC!!!
By 15 minutes the score was 3-0 courtesy of captain Fran. Great lead up play coming from the back. Suzanne picked out a great ball to Jo who ran it down to the right baseline and pulled it back to the P spot for a nice easy put away. Some questionable tackling (admittedly from both sides) gained the 3s their 2nd penalty corner of the game and, most importantly, the 4th goal for SHC. Suzanne was in the right place at the right time to calmly slot it away for a goal on her debut!
Shortly after, the first of two yellows were shown to Beth for some colourful language following some horrendous sledge hammer blows to her stick from some Wiley Wakefield ‘tackles’. Even with 10 players, it didn’t affect the 3s thanks to some great defensive work from Erica, Bex and Maddie kept the ball out of SHCs D. With Beth back on the pitch, 9 minutes later she was shown a questionable second yellow. However that didn’t stop the 3s, 30 seconds later Jo Paul had her second goal of the day and Sheffield’s 5th. 5-0 at half time.
Finally 3 extra Wakefield players arrived to save their team but Sheffield proved too strong to break down and it didn’t effect the score line. Even with the bare 11 the 3s managed a clean sheet and 5 goals, a pretty mean feat if you ask me. Noticeable performances from Naomi and Sophie Farrow who seemed to absolutely everywhere and stopped so many balls getting through. If effort equalled goals then they’d have had at least 5 each! The game ended 5-0 to SHC.
MOM - Jo Paul
DOD - Beth Harwood, two yellow cards
Next up, Bingley Bees who lost their first game 7-0. Lets hope for another ruthless performance from the 3s!
