As we move towards Christmas the men's 1s play their final home game before their winter break. Please come down to support if you can, it was a great atmosphere last week.

This week I spoke to Saul Halladay. He is the men's 3rd team captain but also the club secretary, fixture secretary, summer league organiser and general voice of reason around the club. This is what he had to say:

How’s the season going?

Pretty well so far. We are currently second in the league and have only lost one game. It's obviously still early but with a bit of hard work we are hopeful of finishing at the top of the table.

What is your biggest issue this season?

Availability isn't what it once was. We have quite an aging squad who are now balancing hockey and family commitments. Having a consistent team week in and week out is often difficult but I feel that we are now learning how we adapt to this.

What improvements around the club have been most important?

I feel that the spirit of the club has improved hugely over the past couple of seasons. It's great to see such a high level of interaction between teams at both ends of the club. A lot of credit has to go to the club captains for working hard to increase the amount of social activity that takes place. I also think that Hearney/Beavo have done an incredible job of increasing the involvement of the 1st XI in the day to day activities of the club.

Has it been difficult not being able to find a decent left half for the last few seasons?

Obvious losing Ray this season has had a huge impact. He's always been capable of combining sheer brilliance with moments of undeniable madness. The sort of player that you hate to play against and you also hate to play alongside. I don't really remember who occupied the slot before Ray. I just remember that they occupied more of the slot than him.

Exactly how skilful is Chris Woodcock?

Very hard to measure either from a quantitative or qualitative perspective. Arguably the most skilful person to grace a hockey pitch.

Thanks to Saul who gave up time with his new born baby to answer these. Bad dad.

Good luck to everyone this weekend!
